The Starfish Connection, Inc. is a 501c3 corporation whose mission is to support academically talented students from low income families reach their potential and their dreams of attending college. It is a comprehensive program that identifies high potential children from high risk socio-economic groups in the 3rd grade, and provides mentoring, advocacy, educational support, enrichment, and extracurricular activities throughout their elementary, middle and high school years.

The Starfish Connection was founded in 2008 by David and Judith Martin in memory of their mothers, June Martin and Rhoda Reasenberg. It is a small and selective program that provides each student with individualized attention. Working with identified students, their families, and their schools, the Starfish Connection provides opportunities for the students to broaden their horizons, their experiences and their knowledge.

Each child is assigned a mentor who, ideally, will follow the student through high school graduation. Over the 10-year period, the students meet with their mentors on a biweekly basis, participate in after-school and summer enrichment programs, volunteer in the community, participate in background broadening experiences, avail themselves of college preparatory and AP classes, and apply to colleges. All enrichment and tutoring services are provided through existing partner organizations within the community. Our role is to match the child with the service, facilitating the match financially and otherwise. Our focus is on the child and his/her success.

The Starfish Connection is a 3-way partnership. The student is responsible for achieving a B average in college preparatory and AP classes and fully participating in self-selected extra-curricular activities. The family is responsible for ensuring the student fully participates in the program – reaching out to the Starfish Connection and the child’s mentor when needed – and providing the requisite information regarding the student’s activities and grades. The Starfish Connection is responsible for providing a knowledgeable mentor who will guide and advocate for the student, and making available support, enrichment and extra-curricular activities in line with the student’s interests and goals.

The goal is to ensure each Starfish Connection student is ready and able to attend a college of his/her choice after completing high school.

The program will be expanded as funds and capable mentors are available.
